Trump’s glaring policy contradictions are both a blessing and a curse

Hours after US President Donald Trump delivered his inaugural address on January 20, financial market analysts rushed out reports that said investors should steel themselves for a roller-coaster ride. While Trump’s capriciousness is well known, his ability to constantly catch his audience off guard is extraordinary.
No sooner did Trump indicate he would refrain from immediately imposing new trade tariffs on other countries than he announced he would slap levies of 25 per cent on Canada and Mexico as soon as February 1. The impulsiveness and unpredictability that defined Trump’s first term in office will be just as prevalent, and perhaps more, in his second term.
What will make the roller-coaster ride even more volatile are the glaring contradictions in Trump’s economic agenda. On one hand, there are pledges to lower inflation and weaken the US dollar to stimulate exports and help narrow the trade deficit. On the other, there are promises to cut taxes, deregulate the economy, raise tariffs sharply and crack down on immigration.
Brimming with confidence after his election victory, Trump is convinced he can have his cake and eat it. Yet nationalism and protectionism make it much more difficult to bring down prices, reform public finances, boost innovation and improve US competitiveness.
JPMorgan said the Trump administration is “stretched between two competing economic objectives: a growth-supportive shift to relieve business tax and regulatory burdens alongside a less constructive shift to reduce US engagement with the rest of the world in the flow of goods and immigrants”.
Moreover, disparate factions in Trump’s economic team accentuate and exacerbate tensions in policymaking. The Maga hardliners are staunchly anti-immigration and anti-free trade. Pragmatic Republicans, such as Trump’s treasury secretary nominee Scott Bessent, support the less extreme parts of “Trumponomics”.

Chinese developer Shimao’s lender seeks private credit deal on US$1.3 billion loan

A Shimao Group Holdings lender is in talks with private credit investors in hopes of offloading a HK$10 billion (US$1.3 billion) loan due this year tied to a luxury Hong Kong residential complex that is key to the defaulted Chinese developer’s restructuring, according to people familiar with the matter.
Singapore-based United Overseas Bank (UOB) has reached out to such investors in recent weeks for a deal regarding the loan, they said. The loan, taken out by Shimao in 2022, matures on September 30. It is backed by the Beacon Peak complex, located in Hong Kong’s Kowloon Tong neighbourhood.
The builder, which is looking to unload assets to pay back creditors, put 13 units of the complex up for sale this month, according to sales documents. It has sold three of them as of January 18 at prices ranging from HK$28 million to HK$37 million, records showed.
That is still far short of the loan principal, and the sales pace underscores Shimao’s challenges in trying to raise cash quickly in Hong Kong’s weak and discounted property market. The involvement of private credit investors could further complicate an ongoing debt-restructuring process, as their business model often operates on seizing borrowers’ assets when they default.
“Shimao may struggle to achieve a high sell-through rate at its new Beacon Peak project in Kowloon, given its distance from transport links,” Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Kristy Hung and Monica Si wrote in a note.
Shimao did not immediately reply to a request for comment. UOB did not respond to emails seeking comment, and phone calls were not answered.

Oxfam Hong Kong data leak: watchdog rules charity violated privacy law

The local arm of international charity Oxfam violated the data protection law following a leak in July that potentially affected 550,000 people, Hong Kong’s privacy watchdog ruled in an investigation report on Thursday.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data also revealed a nearly 30 per cent year-on-year increase in breach notifications last year and a 42 per cent year-on-year decrease in doxxing cases over the same period.
“The Privacy Commissioner considered that Oxfam had not taken all practicable steps to ensure that the personal data involved was protected against unauthorised or accidental access, processing, erasure, loss or use,” the commissioner Ada Chung Lai-ling said in the investigation report about the July leak last year.
The report said that Oxfam Hong Kong had contravened the Data Protection Principle (DPP) 4(1) of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance concerning the security of personal data.
“The threat actor deployed ‘DarkHack’ ransomware in Oxfam’s information systems, resulting in file encryption and data exfiltration. A total of 37 servers and 24 workstations or notebook computers belonging to Oxfam were compromised,” she added.
Chung said she had served an enforcement notice on Oxfam, directing it to take measures to remedy the contravention and prevent recurrence of similar contraventions in the future.

Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways has apologised to customers after technical issues disrupted services such as ticketing, online check-in, mobile app and self check-in kiosks on Thursday morning.
The company advised all customers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure to allow sufficient time to complete check-in formalities. Services resumed in stages from about 2pm
The carrier said due to a “system issue”, the services were currently unavailable. Airport check-in counters have been unaffected with its flight operations remaining normal.
“We are urgently working with our technical providers to restore these services as soon as possible, and will provide timely updates. In the meantime, our airport services team is providing all necessary help,” it said.
“We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused and are grateful for their patience.”

Saudi crown prince vows US$600 billion investment pledge in call with Trump

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince said Thursday the kingdom wants to invest US$600 billion in the United States over the next four years, comments that came after President Donald Trump mused about returning to the kingdom as his first foreign trip.
The comments from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reported early Thursday by the state-run Saudi Press Agency, came in a phone call with Trump.
“The crown prince affirmed the kingdom’s intention to broaden its investments and trade with the United States over the next four years, in the amount of US$600 billion, and potentially beyond that,” the report said.
The readout did not elaborate on where those investments and trade could be placed. The US in recent years has increasingly pulled away from relying on Saudi oil exports, which once was the bedrock of their relationship for decades. Saudi sovereign wealth funds have taken large stakes in American businesses while also looking at sports as well.
There was no immediate readout from the White House on the call. It also wasn’t immediately clear if Trump’s call with the crown prince was his first with a foreign leader since re-entering the White House. However, it was the first reported abroad.

SK Hynix profit surpasses Samsung, but shares dip on lower memory chip demand

South Korea’s SK Hynix forecast sales of its high-end semiconductors used in generative artificial intelligence (AI) chipsets would double this year after reporting a record quarterly profit that surpassed its bigger rival Samsung.
Shares in SK Hynix, a key supplier to AI chip giant Nvidia, however, dropped 3 per cent on Thursday as the company warned of steeper demand declines in commodity memory chips used in smartphones and computers, due to economic uncertainty and growing competition from Chinese rivals.
Before the result, SK Hynix shares had jumped about 30 per cent so far this year on bullish sentiment driven by its business discussions with Nvidia, outperforming Samsung, whose shares rose 2 per cent over the same period.
“Uncertainties exist for the memory chip market this year as trade protectionism grows and geopolitical risks deepen, while PC and smartphone companies adjust inventories,” SK Hynix chief financial officer Kim Woo-hyun told analysts on an earnings call.
The company said supply will remain tight for high-performance chips as a result of rising demand, but demand declines will accelerate for legacy products.
Lee Min-hee, an analyst at BNK Investment & Securities, said while fourth-quarter results were strong, SK Hynix’s forecast for first-quarter chip shipments was weaker than expected and disappointed investors.
