US walks back on Trump’s Gaza comments, but Arab leaders remain fearful

Major MTR disruption triggers calls for penalty system review in Hong Kong

Panama Canal denies US claim of free passage through waterway

Google introduces new class of cheap AI models as cost concerns intensify

Google has announced updates to its Gemini language models, introducing a new "Flash-Lite" product that is competitively priced against low-cost AI models, such as those by Chinese competitor DeepSeek. This move comes as part of Google's strategy to diversify its offerings with various versions of Gemini that differ in cost and performance. The company has released Gemini 2.0 Flash to the public, after a developer preview, and introduced Flash-Lite alongside a new version of its "Pro" model for testing.

These updates follow positive reception of the previous Flash model, prompting Google to develop the more affordable Flash-Lite, according to Koray Kavukcuoglu, CTO of Google's DeepMind AI lab. The decision to offer cost-effective AI solutions reflects growing investor scrutiny over the development expenses of AI models. This scrutiny intensified after DeepSeek disclosed its relatively low expenditure of under $6 million on its model's final training run, highlighting the stark contrast with the presumably higher costs faced by leading US AI developers. Google's latest releases aim to maintain competitiveness in the evolving AI landscape while addressing cost concerns.

Africa’s expanding rail links benefit Chinese contractors and mineral needs

Chinese rail contractors are strengthening their presence in East Africa by securing a US$2.15 billion contract to build a railway linking Tanzania's Dar es Salaam port to Burundi's nickel mines. This project aims to enhance the region's connectivity and capitalize on its rich mineral resources, particularly nickel, which is crucial for the global shift towards green energy. The railway, once completed, is expected to transport 3 million tonnes of ore annually.

This undertaking is part of a broader strategy by China to invest in infrastructure projects across Africa, supported by a concessional loan from the African Development Bank. The 282km railway line, to be built by a consortium including China Railway Engineering Group, marks the third such contract awarded to Chinese firms in the region. With an estimated 185 million tonnes of nickel, Burundi's reserves make it a significant player in the global mineral market. The project also aligns with the Tanzania Railways Corporation's commitment to the Standard Gauge Railway initiative, which seeks to connect Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, further boosting regional economic integration.

Malaysia calls Trump plan to move Palestinians from Gaza ‘ethnic cleansing’

By Joseph Sipalan

Malaysia said on Thursday the proposal by US President Donald Trump to remove Palestinians from Gaza was “ethnic cleansing” and Southeast Asian nations have unanimously rejected the idea, which bulldozes all rights of the Muslim group.

Trump on Wednesday in a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a plan for “long-term ownership” of Gaza by the United States that included relocating the territory’s residents elsewhere.

The comments by the notoriously bombastic president were later nuanced by his spokeswoman, but have still caused anxiety and outrage over the potential for Palestinians who have endured nearly year and half of conflict to be expelled from their land.

Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said that all 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) agreed that any attempt to remove Palestinians from Gaza was unacceptable.

“Our stated position is that Asean and Malaysia as chair this year do not agree with any form of violation of international laws,” Mohamad told parliament on Thursday.

“We do not agree with any violation of UN charters. We do not agree with violations of human rights, the Geneva Convention or others.”

This is the first joint position taken by Asean on US foreign policy since Trump returned to the White House for a second term on January 20.

Hong Kong considering complaint to WTO over Trump tariffs: minister

By Lo Hoi-ying

Hong Kong’s commerce minister has said the government is considering launching a dispute with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over America’s “unreasonable” tariffs on the city’s goods, but has dismissed concerns about the policy’s impact.

Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah said on Thursday that the Hong Kong government strongly disapproved of the extra 10 per cent tariffs imposed on products from the city.

He also argued the move showed America’s disregard for Hong Kong’s status as a member of the global trade body.

“We are an independent customs territory. This move is extremely unreasonable and dismissive of WTO regulations,” he told a radio programme.

“We will look into the measure and investigate whether it violates WTO agreements. If necessary, we will not rule out taking action according to the guidelines.”

Yau said the United States had made a mistake in imposing the additional tariffs and called on them to “handle the decision prudently”.

South Korea blocks Chinese AI DeepSeek from government computers

By Park Chan-kyongAgence France-Presse

South Korea’s defence and trade ministries said on Thursday they had blocked DeepSeek’s access to work computers, following a request from the country’s data watchdog for the Chinese artificial intelligence start-up to clarify how it manages user information.

DeepSeek launched its R1 chatbot last month, claiming it matches the capacity of AI pacesetters in the United States for a fraction of the investment.

South Korea, along with countries such as France and Italy, have asked questions about DeepSeek’s data practices, submitting a written request for information about how the company handles user information.

Seoul’s defence ministry said on Thursday it had blocked DeepSeek from military computers connected to the internet, while the trade ministry said that access had been temporarily restricted on all PCs within the agency.

“Access to DeepSeek from military work computers has been blocked,” a defence ministry spokesperson told This Week in Asia.

“The ministry has reinforced security precautions regarding the use of generative AI and implemented necessary pre-emptive measures for military personnel’s work devices.”

The trade ministry said DeepSeek has not responded to the data watchdog’s inquiry.
