Trump denies Elon Musk and Marco Rubio clashed in front of him over staff cuts

How far Chinese women have come since my grandmother’s time

China has made significant strides in women's roles, as evidenced by the author's family history spanning three generations. From a grandmother sold into prostitution to a mother working in a missile factory, and the author herself becoming a writer, the narrative showcases the evolving opportunities for women in Chinese society.

The 1950 Marriage Law, which abolished arranged marriages and concubinage, marked a turning point, followed by increased literacy and equal access to education and employment. While the author's mother benefited from a stable job in a state-owned factory, the era's emphasis on gender equality sometimes overlooked the physical demands placed on women, highlighting both progress and persistent challenges.

All about mahjong: Hong Kong parlour inducts newbies to beloved game

Angus Hung, a Hong Kong resident who has played mahjong for most of his life, recently visited a mahjong parlour for the first time and was surprised by the welcoming and lively atmosphere. He had previously associated such establishments with negative stereotypes, but his experience at the Hong Kong Mahjong Company's open house in Wan Chai proved otherwise.

Hung, who works in insurance, had heard rumors of illicit activities in mahjong parlours, but instead found a comfortable venue filled with laughter and the sounds of clacking tiles. This experience challenged his preconceived notions and highlighted the potential for mahjong parlours to be positive spaces for entertainment and social interaction.

China’s robotics start-ups emerge as new venture-capital darlings

China's robotics market is experiencing a significant investment surge, potentially rivaling the country's electric vehicle (EV) industry in importance. In the first two months of this year, funding for humanoid robot developers reached nearly 2 billion yuan (US$276 million) across 20 deals, a substantial increase from the 1.2 billion yuan generated from just 4 transactions during the same period last year. This boom signals growing confidence in the sector's potential for mass production and commercialization, expected as early as 2025.

This surge in investment reflects China's dominant position in the global humanoid robot ecosystem. According to a recent Morgan Stanley report, 56% of the 100 publicly-traded companies involved in humanoid robot development are based in China. Furthermore, China accounts for 45% of the world's integrators, companies specializing in customizing robots for specific user needs. Recent financing announcements from robotics start-ups like LimX Dynamics, AI2Robotics, and Eyoubot further underscore the rapid growth and investor interest in this field.

US man killed by firing squad in first such execution in 15 years

By Associated Press

A South Carolina man convicted of murder was executed by firing squad Friday, the first US prisoner to die by that method in 15 years.

Brad Sigmon, 67, was pronounced dead at 6.08pm after being shot by three volunteer prison employees wielding rifles loaded with live ammunition.

Sigmon killed his ex-girlfriend’s parents with a baseball bat in their Greenville County home in 2001 in a botched plot to kidnap their daughter. He told police he planned to take her for a romantic weekend, then kill her and himself.

Sigmon’s lawyers said he chose the firing squad because the electric chair would “cook him alive,” and he feared that a lethal injection of pentobarbital into his veins would send a rush of fluid and blood into his lungs and drown him.

The details of South Carolina’s lethal injection method are kept secret, and Sigmon unsuccessfully asked the state Supreme Court on Thursday to pause his execution because of that.

On Friday, Sigmon wore a black jumpsuit with a hood over his head and a white target with a red bullseye over his chest.

Gene Hackman died of heart disease, wife died of hantavirus a week earlier

Actor Gene Hackman, 95, died of heart disease and showed severe signs of Alzheimer’s disease, authorities revealed a week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, died of hantavirus in their home. The bodies were discovered on February 26, and initial investigations ruled out foul play and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Chief Medical Investigator Heather Jarrell suggested Hackman may not have been aware of his wife's death due to advanced Alzheimer's. Arakawa's death was linked to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease spread by infected rodent droppings, while Hackman's death was attributed to heart disease, with Alzheimer's as a contributing factor. Arakawa was found with an open prescription bottle and scattered pills in the bathroom.

Having more women on boards makes business sense. Hong Kong gets it

Despite global progress in gender equality, the World Economic Forum predicts it will take another 134 years to achieve gender parity. While some regions show signs of stalled progress, Hong Kong is demonstrating a positive trend, particularly in its capital markets, as the city celebrates International Women’s Day.

Hong Kong's near-total compliance with the ban on single-gender boards, requiring at least one woman per board in over 2,600 listed companies, is a significant step. This seemingly small requirement is expected to catalyze a broader "diversity journey" within companies, creating more opportunities for women in leadership and fostering a more inclusive workplace culture. The hope is that these company-led initiatives, spurred by the ban, will lead to sustainable and market-driven change.

US mulls ban on China’s DeepSeek from government devices, insider says

Trump says he may hit Canada with tariffs on dairy and timber ‘as early as today’

By Reuters

US President Donald Trump on Friday railed against what he called tremendously high Canadian tariffs on dairy and timber, and said his administration could impose reciprocal tariffs on Canadian products as early as Friday.

“Canada has been ripping us off on for years on tariffs for lumber and for dairy products,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “They’ll be met with the exact same tariffs, unless they drop it, and … we may do it as early as today or we’ll wait ’til Monday or Tuesday”.

Trump also mentioned India’s high tariff rates, but said India had agreed to lower its import duties.

On Thursday, Trump suspended tariffs of 25 per cent imposed this week on most goods from Canada and Mexico.

In a Fox Business Network interview aired earlier on Friday he said he had wanted to implement the 30-day break for goods compliant with a regional free trade deal to help carmakers. But he added that the reprieve was a short-term measure and tariffs could go up over time.

“I thought it would be a fair thing to do, and so I gave them a little bit of a break for this short period of time,” Trump said in the interview.

Trump’s ‘cyber summit’ gives digital currency new credibility with prominent US role

By Mark Magnier

US President Donald Trump’s inaugural “crypto summit” at the White House on Friday was characterised by many of his classic touches: breaking tradition, teasing potentially risky bets and offering up US government resources in a new and starkly different way.

Hours before it was due to start, Trump announced the signing of an executive order establishing a “Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and United States Digital Asset Stockpile”.

Analysts cautioned that this could place US assets in a highly volatile medium that many consider speculative.

“I will make sure the US is the Crypto Capital of the World,” Trump said earlier this week on social media, announcing that the reserve would involve five cryptocurrencies: bitcoin, ether, XRP, solana and cardano.

But the executive order largely focused on bitcoin.

“Bitcoin is often referred to as ‘digital gold’,” it read. “Just as it is in our country’s interest to thoughtfully manage national ownership and control of any other resource, our nation must harness, not limit, the power of digital assets for our prosperity.”

Unlike ordinary paper currency, cryptocurrency is not issued by a central government, instead operating on a decentralised digital network. As such, digital currencies have no intrinsic value or legislated status as legal tender and are only worth what buyers are willing to pay.

After Trump clash, Zelensky’s approval rating in Ukraine rises to 67%

By Reuters

President Volodymyr Zelensky’s approval rating has risen by 10 percentage points since his White House clash with US President Donald Trump, a poll by a leading Ukrainian pollster showed on Friday.

The poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) showed that 67 per cent of respondents trusted Zelensky in March, up from 57 per cent a month earlier.

The survey was conducted from February 14 to March 4 – a challenging time for Zelensky as Kyiv’s relations with the United States, its biggest military backer, plunged into crisis after the Oval Office meeting on February 28.

Anton Hrushetskyi, KIIS’ executive director, said the poll showed Ukrainians were rallying behind Zelensky more than three years after Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“Ukrainians perceive the rhetoric of the new US administration as an attack on the whole of Ukraine and all Ukrainians,” Hrushetskyi said in a statement.

He said Ukrainians want peace but not a peace that comes at too high a cost.

Why a renewed US-China trade war could yield bumper harvest for Brazilian farmers

TSMC may have dodged Trump tariffs but lawsuit over ‘anti-American’ practices presses on

TSMC, the world's leading semiconductor manufacturer, appears to have strategically mitigated potential tariffs by announcing a massive US$100 billion investment in Arizona. This move, involving the construction of five factories, aligns with the "Make-in-America" initiative and could help the company avoid tariffs of up to 100% that have been threatened. TSMC is already investing heavily in Arizona, including two additional factories and a semiconductor fabrication facility, supported in part by subsidies from the Chips and Science Act of 2022.

However, this significant investment announcement coincides with a legal battle where TSMC is accused of "anti-American" workforce practices. The accusations include discrimination and hostility towards non-East Asian employees, as well as allegations of sexual misconduct. While TSMC denies these claims, and some employees have voiced their support for the company, the legal proceedings are set to begin next month and could potentially overshadow the company's efforts to expand its advanced chip production in the United States.

Trump ‘strongly’ mulls banking sanctions, tariffs on Russia

Donald Trump
