Germany races to save a Russian ‘shadow fleet’ tanker to prevent an oil spill

US ‘risks electronic warfare’ with China after unveiling anti-satellite jammer network

Somalia’s president to visit Ethiopia over Red Sea access, mounting tensions

By Agence France-Presse

Somalia’s president will visit Ethiopia on Saturday, his office said, as the two countries look to build on a recent peace deal that aims to defuse mounting tensions in the Horn of Africa.

Land-locked Ethiopia’s desire for access to the sea has deepened long-standing grievances with its neighbours in the volatile region.

Somalia was outraged when Ethiopia signed a deal one year ago with its breakaway region of Somaliland, reportedly to recognise its independence in exchange for a port and military base on the Red Sea.

The diplomatic furore was defused by a peace deal signed last month by Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, which was mediated by Turkey.

Mohamud’s office said he would visit the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Saturday at Abiy’s request.

“This visit builds on the recent agreement reached in Ankara. This renewed cooperation underscores a new era of collaboration between Somalia and Ethiopia,” it said.

But many questions remain unresolved.

Will TikTok verdict by US top court set the tone for China ties under Trump 2.0?

By Holly Chik

The US Supreme Court’s coming verdict on TikTok would influence Chinese firms’ willingness to engage in the US market and also be the first glimpse into the future of US-China ties with Donald Trump back in the White House, observers said.

The US Supreme Court on Friday heard oral arguments that are likely to determine whether the hugely popular short-video app can continue operating in the United States without severing ties to its Chinese parent, tech company ByteDance.

President Joe Biden signed a law in April to ban the app within a year unless it was divested from ByteDance. TikTok and its millions of US users are seeking to block the ban, citing the right to freedom of speech under the First Amendment.

While the timeline for a ruling remains uncertain, TikTok would shut down for its 170 million American users from January 19 if the verdict went against it.

That would be a day before president-elect Trump is sworn into office for a second term. Two weeks ago, he urged the top court to postpone its ruling until then.

Meanwhile, questions posed by Supreme Court justices on Friday appeared to highlight national security concerns rather than the free-speech arguments put forward by TikTok and its content creators.

China gets major Nigeria rail project back on track by granting key loan

By Carol Yang

Chinese state lenders have approved a loan for a key segment of a new cross-country rail project in Nigeria, in a deal that appears to reflect China’s increasingly pragmatic approach to development financing in Africa.

China Development Bank, a major policy bank, announced on Tuesday that it would grant an initial €245 million (US$253.7 million) tranche of funding for the Kaduna-Kano rail project, which is part of a larger rail corridor linking Nigeria from north to south.

The deal was announced during Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi’s visit to four African nations this week, which has seen China make renewed pledges to up its investment in the region.

“China has become an important driving force for global connectivity,” foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a media briefing on Wednesday, citing a variety of cross-border rail projects China helped build.

But the financing agreement also signals China’s growing caution toward large-scale infrastructure construction in the developing world, as Beijing shifts its lending strategy toward “small yet smart” projects.

The Kaduna-Kano railway – a 203km (126-mile) line connecting Nigeria’s northern state of Kaduna with its second-largest city, Kano – has an estimated total cost of US$1.2 billion, with China providing 85 per cent of the financing and the Nigerian government committing the rest.

According to a local source with knowledge of the project, the new line is designed to connect two previous Chinese-backed rail projects in Nigeria: one linking the capital city, Abuja, with Kaduna, and another running between the country’s largest city, Lagos, and its third-largest city, Ibadan.

Syrians sing songs of victory, revolution a month after Assad’s overthrow

By Associated Press

A packed concert hall in Damascus came alive this week with cheers as Wasfi Maasarani, a renowned singer and symbol of the Syrian uprising, performed in celebration of “Syria’s victory.”

The concert on Wednesday marked Maasarani’s return to Syria after 13 years of exile. While living in Los Angeles, Maasarani had continued to support Syria’s uprising through his music, touring the US and Europe.

The concert organised by the Molham Volunteering Team, a humanitarian organisation founded by Syrian students, also marked a month since a lightning insurgency toppled former President Bashar al-Assad.

Revolutionary songs like those by Maasarani and Abdelbasset Sarout – a Syrian singer and activist who died in 2019 – played a key role in rallying Syrians during the nearly 14-year uprising-turned civil war starting in 2011.

Many opponents of Assad’s rule, like Maasarani, had fled the country and were unsure if they would ever be able to come back.

In the dimly lit concert hall, the crowd’s phone lights flickered like stars, swaying in unison with the music as the audience sang along, some wiping away tears. The crowd cheered and whistled and many waved the new Syrian flag, the revolutionary flag marked by three stars. A banner held up in the hall read, “It is Syria the Great, not Syria the Assad.”

One of Maasarani’s best known songs is “Jabeenak ’Ali w Ma Bintal,” which he first sang in 2012, addressing the Free Syrian Army. It was a coalition of defected Syrian military personnel and civilian fighters formed in 2011 to oppose Assad during the civil war.

Chinese and Indonesian coastguards pledge deeper cooperation after first high-level talks

By Wendy Wu

The Chinese and Indonesian coastguards held their first senior-level talks this week on boosting maritime security cooperation.

The two sides discussed topics such as setting up regular meetings at all levels, port calls and capability build-up, the China Coast Guard said on Saturday.

“Both sides believe that it is necessary to further deepen pragmatic maritime cooperation, jointly maintain the order of maritime security and properly deal with maritime emergencies,” its statement said.

The talks took place in Beijing during a visit by Vice-Admiral Irvansyah, chief of the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency, that began on Tuesday and ended on Saturday and took place at China’s invitation.

“The meeting is not only a symbol of the close relations between both institutions but also a joint commitment to create a safe, peaceful and prosperous maritime region,” he said, according to the Indonesian coastguard.

The delegation also visited the headquarters of a coastguard unit in the southern city of Guangzhou and inspected operational facilities and a patrol vessel.

China has in recent years stepped up its efforts to engage with Indonesia on the economic and security front amid its growing strategic rivalry with the United States and rising tensions with the Philippines in the South China Sea.

Suspected hitman extradited to Thailand over shooting of Cambodian lawmaker

By Reuters

A suspected hitman accused of killing a Cambodian former opposition lawmaker in a brazen attack in Bangkok was handed over to Thai authorities on Saturday from Cambodia, where he had been arrested after crossing the border.

Thai national Ekkalak Paenoi, 41, faces charges including premeditated murder in the Tuesday shooting death of Lim Kimya, 74, in the Thai capital.

“The suspect confessed to the crime and to being the person in the arrest warrant,” Somprasong Yentuam, assistant national police chief, told reporters. “He looked stressed.”

Ekkalak, a motorcycle taxi driver who police officers told journalists was a former marine, was taken to Bangkok after Thai police coordinated with Cambodian authorities. A Thai court issued the warrant and he was arrested on Wednesday.

Lim Kimya, a Cambodian and French citizen, was killed by a gunman firing three shots, hours after arriving from Cambodia with his wife and brother and travelling to Bangkok by bus, police have said.

He was a member of the Cambodia National Rescue Party, a popular opposition group that was dissolved by a court over an alleged treason plot ahead of a 2018 election. The party dismissed the alleged plot as a fabrication.

Why China’s young jobseekers are being held back by an overseas education

By Dannie Peng

Despite holding degrees from some of the world’s most prestigious universities, many returning Chinese graduates are struggling to find good jobs, and the reason may not just be a spike in competition.

Intensifying geopolitical tensions and national security concerns are also coming into play, according to observers.

Chinese graduates with foreign degrees are being excluded by many provinces in the xuandiaosheng, or “selected and assigned graduates” system, a recruitment programme for the civil service designed to select and train future elite cadres for the ruling Communist Party and government.

In the southern province of Guangdong, for example, graduates from institutions outside mainland China are not eligible to apply for the 2025 round, according to an official notice published in December.

This applies to all US Ivy League schools and other renowned institutions like the University of Cambridge and the National University of Singapore.

Similarly, in the eastern province of Shandong, the latest recruitment policy for assigned graduates, published in October, said 2025 applicants would only be selected from domestic colleges and universities.

China subway scalper detained over 70 US cents seat-saving scheme during rush hours

By Alice Yan

A man in Shanghai has caused controversy by appraently offering a service that charges people five yuan (7 US cents) for a seat on the city’s subway during rush hours.

The man, surnamed Zhou, who lives and works in the Lingang New Zone in the southeastern part of the city, posted on social media on December 19 that he could offer his seat on subway Line 16 during the morning and evening rush hours.

The apparent scalper has since been placed under administrative detention, but claims he only spread details of the scheme as a rumour to gain online attention, according to the mainland media outlet The Paper.

He earlier said service costs five yuan which covers the underground fee for his single journey, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Line 16 is crowded with work commuters in the early hours every day as it connects the suburban Lingang area with downtown.

Zhou said he gets on the train at a terminal station, ensuring him a seat. He said he starts his trip at 7:30am and gets off the train at Huinan Station or Xinchang Station near his office.
