Israel says 8 hostages set for release in first phase of truce are dead

Eight of the hostages expected to be released in the first phase of a truce deal between Israel and Hamas are dead, Israeli government spokesman David Mencer said on Monday.
“The families have been informed of the situation of their relatives,” Mencer told reporters, without providing the names of the deceased.
That means that of the 26 hostages yet to be freed under the first phase of the agreement, only 18 are still alive.
The truce deal, announced earlier in January after months of fruitless negotiations, took effect on January 19, bringing to a halt more than 15 months of war sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack.
Under the first phase of the agreement, 33 hostages held by militants in Gaza are to be released in exchange for more than 1,900 Palestinians held by Israel.
Seven Israeli women have been released since the start of the truce, as have 290 Palestinian prisoners.

Hong Kong man, 29, lured to Southeast Asian ‘scam farm’ returns home

A Hongkonger who was lured to Southeast Asia and held captive at a “scam farm” in Myanmar since October returned to the city on Monday, as the government revealed that a security official would remain in Bangkok to continue efforts to rescue 10 other residents stranded in similar fraud centres in the region.
The 29-year-old man was taken to the airport’s police station at about 12.30am on Tuesday soon after he returned to Hong Kong on a flight from Bangkok with members of a designated task force from the Security Bureau.
Assistant Secretary for Security Paddy Yuen Pak-kei thanked authorities in mainland China, Thailand and Myanmar for helping with the release of the Hongkonger.
Yuen said that with the Thai authorities’ “humane” help, the time taken to send the victim home was reduced to a few days, allowing him to reunite with his family before Lunar New Year.
He said the man was very excited when they met on Monday.
“He said he hadn’t used Cantonese for a long time. We [the task force] were deeply moved too because we successfully brought him back to Hong Kong safely,” Yuen added.
“He also revealed he had some plans to celebrate [Lunar New Year] and asked me for some restaurant recommendations.”

The person acquired the infection on a farm, where they had close and prolonged contact with numerous infected birds, the UK Health Security Agency said.
The risk to the wider public continues to be very low, it added.
Meanwhile, the United States has reported its first outbreak of H5N9 bird flu in poultry on a duck farm in California, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Monday.
US authorities also detected the more common H5N1 strain on the same farm in Merced County, California, they said in a report to Paris-based WOAH, adding that the almost 119,000 birds on the farm had been killed since December 2.
Highly pathogenic bird flu (HPAI), commonly called bird flu, has spread around the globe in recent years, leading to the culling of hundreds of millions of poultry. It also spread to dozens of mammal species, including dairy cows in the US, and killed a person in Louisiana.

The rise of little-known Chinese tech start-up DeepSeek has exposed weaknesses in America’s “small yard, high fence” strategy to contain China’s technological progress, according to experts.
The company’s success has also signalled an intensifying competition between the US and China to win over the brightest AI minds, they said, while noting that China may still have a long way to go to become a leading global AI player.
This week, DeepSeek, a research lab based in Hangzhou, topped the free download charts in app stores in both China and the US, even surpassing ChatGPT in the US rankings.
The platform also triggered alarm among investors in US tech companies about their dominance in AI, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq down a whopping 4 per cent and AI darling Nvidia dropping as much as 12 per cent in pre-market trading on Monday.
The firm, which mostly consists of fresh graduates from Chinese universities, stunned the tech world when it released its latest large language model (LLM) R1 on January 20 with performance that matched that of OpenAI’s o1 series of reasoning models.
LLMs are large deep-learning models that are pre-trained on vast amounts of data and refer to the technology underpinning generative AI services such as ChatGPT.
