President Donald Trump on Friday revoked his predecessor Joe Biden’s security clearance in a blizzard of new orders and escalated his campaign to dismantle the US humanitarian agency charged with helping the world’s poorest and extending American influence around the globe.
In a new series of rapid-fire power plays, the 78-year-old billionaire also froze aid to South Africa, where his top donor Elon Musk was born, and named himself head of one of Washington’s premier cultural venues, the Kennedy Centre.
“There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information,” Trump said on his Truth Social network, adding that he was “immediately” revoking the Democrat’s security clearances and ending his daily intelligence briefings.
“Joe, you’re fired,” he added.
Trump said Biden set the precedent four years earlier. Biden, in 2021, said he would rescind Trump’s access to security briefings, citing Trump’s “erratic behaviour”.
US presidents are traditionally given the right to receive intelligence briefings even after they step down.

China’s PLA targets top brass in campaign touting political loyalty to Xi Jinping

China’s top military command has rolled out a major education campaign to instil political loyalty to President Xi Jinping – an initiative aimed primarily at the top ranks of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
In a notice on Tuesday to all personnel in the world’s second largest military force, the political work department of the powerful Central Military Commission (CMC) said the campaign should focus on the “key few” – a term the ruling Communist Party uses to describe senior officials with decision-making power on critical matters.
The CMC, the top decision-making and command body for the Chinese armed forces, is chaired by Xi.
“[We should] focus on the ‘key few’, to strengthen [their] learning and ideological transformation, to … truly achieve greater actual results in learning, understanding, believing and application [of Xi’s military thought],” the notice issued on the final day of China’s Lunar New Year break said.
The notice said the PLA must continue to use Xi’s political thought to “unite hearts and forge souls”, and study his thoughts on strengthening the military “deeply and persistently” by reading his original works repeatedly.
It also advised the PLA to stay focused on its centenary goals, put lessons into practice and action, and carry out special education focused on the beliefs and values of officials and soldiers, while ensuring combat readiness.

In 2022, under the pseudonym “an ordinary little pig”, the founder of artificial intelligence (AI) start-up DeepSeek quietly donated 138 million yuan (US$19 million) to Chinese charities. The name, a nod to Wang Xiaobo’s dark-humour short story “A Maverick Pig”, reportedly masked the true identity of Liang Wenfeng, a man whose quantum trading operation was facing mounting regulatory pressure.
On January 28 that year, Liang’s hedge fund High-Flyer Quant issued a statement to the public denying that its quantum trading was responsible for a plunge in Chinese stocks.
“In recent days, there was market gossip that a coordinated sell-off by quant trading institutions had led to a market downfall,” High-flyer said. “We’ve discussed with managers of the major players in the industry and they all denied such a thing. Please don’t believe the gossip, thanks.”
Three years later, DeepSeek, a spin-off from High-Flyer, would make headlines for actually being responsible for roiling the US stock market. On January 27, a massive sell-off wiped out nearly US$1 trillion in tech stocks, including US$600 billion from Nvidia alone.
The catalyst was the release of DeepSeek’s R1 reasoning model, which came just weeks after it unveiled the more traditional V3 large language model (LLM). These models rivalled the performance of OpenAI’s offerings at a fraction of the cost, casting doubt on the assumptions underpinning the high valuations of US chip and AI companies.

Plane found matching aircraft missing in Alaska, along with 3 bodies

A plane has been located that matches the description of the one that went missing in Alaska on its way to the hub community of Nome with 10 aboard, authorities said Friday. Three bodies were found inside the aircraft.
Cameron Snell, a spokesman for the US coastguard, said crews had not been able to fully open the plane and were continuing to search: “Right now we just know that there’s three.”
Rescuers were searching the aircraft’s last known location by helicopter when they spotted the wreckage, according to Mike Salerno, another coastguard spokesman. They lowered two rescue swimmers to investigate.
The Bering Air single-engine turboprop plane was travelling from Unalakleet on Thursday afternoon with nine passengers and a pilot, according to Alaska’s Department of Public Safety.
Bering Air provides services to 32 communities in western Alaska from hubs in Nome, Kotzebue and Unalakleet. Most Alaska communities are not connected to the state’s main road system and rely heavily on alternative means of travel, including small aeroplanes.

Warnings of China travel dangers fail to put off foreign tourists

Dutch national Fercan Molenaar did not check any government advice before taking his first trip to China in August – and he is hardly alone.
The 27-year-old instead consulted friends who were familiar with the country. On his two-day trip to the giant southern city of Guangzhou en route to South Korea, he found ups and downs that government advisories were unlikely to cover.
Molenaar and his French girlfriend said they felt safer in China than in France or the Netherlands, despite Dutch government warnings about pickpockets, theft and Chinese people using force to exact payment for expensive guide services.
Their biggest hardship? Double-paying at a restaurant because of a mobile app glitch, which a friend helped sort out. Few people, even at Guangzhou’s airport, spoke much English, but they muddled through.
“We did not know much, to be honest,” said Molenaar, who works in the finance office of a pharmaceutical company. He said they picked China because they were keen to travel farther from home, and “we definitely did not think it was going to be as safe as it was”.
His story depicts a wider China travel trend: formal advisories being overlooked in favour of timely, accessible tips from personal contacts and privately run travel websites – or, in some cases, no advice at all.

Will closer Philippine-South Korea military ties make China ‘insecure’?

The Philippines’ potential purchase of more fighter jets from South Korea and the two countries’ growing military collaboration could push Beijing to feel more “insecure” as tensions roil the contested South China Sea, according to analysts.
Manila is considering buying an additional 12 units of the South Korean supersonic combat aircraft FA-50 Fighting Eagle Block 20, the Inquirer, a Philippine news outlet reported in January, citing defence department procurement data.
The Fighting Eagle is a variant of the FA-50 with an improved capability for beyond-visual-range air-to-air missions.
The potential 40 billion Philippine peso (US$690 million) deal was expected to be finalised by the middle of the year and would double Manila’s export-variant FA-50PH fleet, according to the report.
The Philippines Air Force currently operates 12 units bought in the early 2010s.
Manila is ramping up its modernisation efforts within its military, especially the air force, amid increasing tensions with Beijing in the South China Sea.
