Trump guts Voice of America, museum, homelessness agencies

President Trump has signed an executive order to significantly reduce the operations of several US government-funded agencies, including the US Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America. The order aims to streamline these agencies to their legally mandated minimum, reflecting the administration's ongoing efforts to shrink the federal bureaucracy.

Besides the Agency for Global Media, the order targets agencies like the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the US Interagency Council on Homelessness. Trump previously clashed with Voice of America and had selected Kari Lake, a staunch ally known for accusing mainstream media of anti-Trump bias, to be its director for his second term. The move signals a potential shift in the direction and focus of these government-funded entities.

As Chinese gas investments in Africa take off, oil imports sink

While China's oil imports from Africa have significantly decreased in recent years, Chinese companies are dramatically increasing their investments in African liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. This shift aims to meet China's growing energy demands and reduce its dependence on Australian gas supplies.

Specifically, Mozambique has become a key area for natural gas production after substantial reserves were discovered. China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) holds a significant stake in major projects like the Rovuma LNG project and the Coral Floating Liquefied Natural Gas project, demonstrating China's commitment to securing LNG resources from the continent.

Paris boxing gender row was product of Russian fake news

By Reuters

A gender row involving two female boxers at the Paris 2024 Olympics was the result of a Russian fake news campaign and had little to do with reality, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said on Saturday.

Bach, who is stepping down in June after 12 years in charge of the biggest job in world sports, said the IOC had needed to fight off many similar campaigns before and after the Paris Games.

The boxing competition at the Paris Games was run by the IOC after it stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of recognition last year over its failure to implement reforms on governance and finance.

But the IBA, run by Russian businessman Umar Kremlev with close links to the Kremlin, accused the IOC during Paris of allowing two female athletes, who had been banned by the IBA following a chromosome test a year earlier, to compete.

A bitter war of words ensued between the two organisations and hogged the headlines during the Games.

“I would not consider this [Paris Games gender row] a real crisis because all this discussion is based on a fake news campaign coming from Russia,” Bach said in an interview at the southern Greek seaside resort where his successor will be elected on Thursday.

China brings back 3,000 suspects from Myanmar cyber scam hub after ‘no safe havens’ vow

By Xinlu Liang

China has repatriated nearly 3,000 telecoms fraud suspects from Myanmar since launching a joint crackdown with Myanmar and Thailand earlier this year, according to the top Chinese police authority.

The latest transfer saw 2,255 Chinese nationals held in Myanmar’s Myawaddy region escorted back under police supervision, bringing the total to 2,876, China’s Ministry of Public Security said on Friday.

Myawaddy in southeastern Myanmar along the Thai border has become a notorious hub for large-scale scams, particularly online fraud. Scam gangs have also been using Thailand as a trafficking route, with the Thai border town of Mae Sot across the Moei River from Myawaddy becoming a key trafficking point for victims to be taken to scam farms in Myanmar.

Myanmar sent the suspects to Thailand from where Chinese police escorted them back on chartered flights to the eastern cities of Nanjing and Shanghai, the ministry statement said.

A first batch of 200 suspects was similarly sent back on February 20.

In a report on Friday, China’s Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily said the return of the 2,876 suspects would serve as “a strong deterrent against foreign criminal groups” targeting Chinese.

Beijing steps up attack on Hong Kong’s Hutchison, warning over ‘dancing’ with US

By Fiona Sun

Beijing has stepped up attacks on Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing’s CK Hutchison Holdings over its Panama Canal ports sale by sharing another commentary warning entrepreneurs who choose to “dance with Americans” will have no future even if they secure a “big deal”.

The article, published by pro-Beijing newspaper Ta Kung Pao on Saturday and shared in full by the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office and the liaison office, also lauded well-known Chinese entrepreneurs who were “never cold-blooded profit-seekers but passionate and proud patriots”.

It was the second newspaper commentary about Hutchison’s port deal the Beijing offices have shared in three days, moves seen as an indirect way for the central government to pressure the company into reconsidering the sale.

In the commentary headlined “Great entrepreneurs are all staunch patriots”, the writer said Hutchison’s deal had fuelled concerns among Chinese over why the Hong Kong-based company would transfer ports to the “ill-intentioned” US so easily and questioned the “political calculations” behind the move.

“Did the so-called smart transaction take into account the interests of the nation? Is this choice aiding and abetting evil and harming China and the world?” the commentary said.

“Both history and reality remind entrepreneurs at the forefront of the storm that the only way to defend the nation, win dignity and maintain their reputation is to stand firmly with the country and fight bravely in the face of US bullying.”

What does China Islamic Association’s rebrand reveal about Beijing’s integration drive?

The China Islamic Association has replaced its traditional Arabic-style logo with a simpler, blue design featuring only Chinese characters, signaling a further push for the sinicization of religions in China. The original logo, featuring green background, stars and a mosque dome, has been removed from the association's website and social media accounts.

Analysts warn that this rebrand could alienate Muslims and foster feelings of cultural erasure, potentially undermining efforts to integrate Islam into Chinese society. The change, implemented just before Ramadan, has sparked concerns about the increasing restrictions on religious expression and the imposition of "Chinese characteristics" on Islam.

China lays track for stronger regional relations through railway lines
