Gong Cha was founded in 2006 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
In 2017, 70 per cent of its ownership was sold to Kim Yeo-Jin, the owner of Gong Cha Korea, the brand’s Korean franchisee, with backing from the private equity firm Unison Capital.

With the fate of suspended South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol hanging in the balance, the country has also been left facing an uncertain future as it battles through the resulting political turmoil.
Analysts say that the power transitions, both in Seoul and Washington, could significantly alter the dynamics between East Asian neighbours South Korea, Japan and China.
Impeached South Korean leader Yoon was arrested on Wednesday over the short-lived martial law that he imposed during a televised address on December 3.
The country is still dealing with the political fallout of that act. While it could be months before a final court decision is handed down, South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, who has maintained friendly relations with both China and North Korea, looks most likely to take over should Yoon be removed from office.
In the United States, meanwhile, all eyes are on Donald Trump as he returns to the White House, to see what he will do in the Indo-Pacific region. It is still uncertain whether Trump, who is known for his transactional and isolationist bent, will follow the policies of his predecessor Joe Biden with regard to the Indo-Pacific and multilateral partnerships in the region.
With so much still up in the air, observers said that Seoul could move closer to Beijing and further from Tokyo, even putting the trilateral Japan-South Korea-US partnership in jeopardy.

Indonesia may need US$6 billion more to expand free lunch programme

Indonesia may need an additional 100 trillion rupiah (US$6.1 billion) this year to expand President Prabowo Subianto’s free lunch programme to cover nearly 83 million people by year-end, according to a top official.
“The president has instructed us to accelerate the programme,” Dadan Hindayana, head of the national nutrition agency, said in a text message on Saturday. “If the president wants to accelerate the programme in September-December, we need 100 trillion rupiah in extra funding,” he added.
Hindayana did not say whether Prabowo had approved the additional funding, but the cost may test the former general’s ability to deliver on his promises without jeopardising the country’s fiscal health.
Indonesia set aside 71 trillion rupiah for the lunch programme in the 2025 budget, which was expected to cover up to 17 million people. Costs are expected to climb to to an eventual US$30 billion a year as the programme is rolled out. The initial phase, which started at the beginning of this year, provides food to students, with pregnant and breastfeeding women and toddlers to be included at a later stage. The original target was to feed 3 million recipients between January and April.
The programme is a result of Prabowo’s campaign promise to improve health and education and unlock the growth potential of Southeast Asia’s largest economy. Its success will depend on the government’s ability to manage costs, ensure effective implementation and minimise risks of waste and corruption.
“The president sets the vision and policy. We are simply executing it,” Hindayana said.
