TikTok parent ByteDance denies its secret algorithms create filter bubbles

ByteDance executives have downplayed the impact of their content-recommendation algorithms on creating filter bubbles, amidst scrutiny from both Beijing and Washington. In an interview, Li Liang, vice-president of Douyin, emphasized that the platform is not designed to create "cocoons" of information but rather to promote diverse content that enhances long-term user retention.

Douyin, along with its global counterpart TikTok, has attracted over 2 billion users by personalizing content feeds based on individual viewing habits. While ByteDance's algorithms are highly regarded and protected by the Chinese government from foreign sale, they have raised concerns about users being confined to information that aligns with their existing beliefs. Li explained that the recommendation system employs various strategies, including collaborative filtering, to curate content based on the preferences of similar users, aiming to provide a broader range of information.
