Apple forms Shanghai data-processing venture as AI push in China still in limbo

Apple has established a new data-processing venture in Shanghai as it seeks to enhance its artificial intelligence services for iPhones in mainland China, despite ongoing regulatory challenges. The company, named Apple Technology Development (Shanghai), was registered with a capital of US$35 million and will focus on software development, big data services, storage services, and data processing.

This move comes as Apple faces increasing competition in the world's largest smartphone market, particularly from domestic brands like Huawei Technologies. The venture is led by Tejas Kirit Gala, who oversees Apple's operations in China, and is wholly owned by Apple South Asia. Additionally, Apple is still awaiting regulatory approval to launch its Apple Intelligence suite for iPhone users in the region, which adds another layer of complexity to its operations in China.
