Animal rescuers care for LA fire evacuees – dogs, donkeys, horses

A pit bull mix named Canela was rescued from fire debris in Altadena and is now receiving medical treatment at Pasadena Humane. Found by a Good Samaritan, Canela was covered in ash and suffering from severe injuries. Thanks to CNN’s coverage, he was reunited with his owner despite still being too weak to walk.

Since the Southern California wildfires began last Tuesday, over 400 animals have been brought to the Pasadena facility. Animal shelters and rescue organizations are assisting various displaced animals, including dogs, horses, and goats, as families evacuate their homes. The ongoing disaster has resulted in 13 fatalities, burned 39,000 acres, and forced at least 153,000 people to evacuate.

“We are now seeing more injured animals coming in,” said Dia DuVernet, president and chief executive of Pasadena Humane, highlighting the increasing need for support as the situation evolves.
