German far-right hotbed Chemnitz looks to shed past in 2025 as European Capital of Culture

Chemnitz is positioning itself as the 2025 European Capital of Culture, aiming to attract around two million visitors with 150 arts and cultural projects this year. The initiative, themed “C The Unseen,” seeks to showcase the city’s diverse cultural offerings, ranging from museum exhibits to various performances in music, theatre, film, and dance.

This year-long program includes a wide variety of activities such as panel discussions, street chess, queer culture events, toymaking workshops, a cooking marathon, and a new opera featuring a libretto by Booker Prize-winning author Jenny Erpenbeck. Mayor Sven Schulze hopes these efforts will reshape the city’s image, especially after a surge in far-right violence in 2018 that painted Chemnitz in a negative light, contrasting with its potential as a vibrant cultural hub amidst larger cities like Dresden and Leipzig.
