China developer Vanke’s shares drop amid reports of CEO detention by police

China Vanke's shares plummeted over 8% amid rumors that its president had been detained by police, raising fears about the company's ability to manage its significant debt burden. The stock opened at HK$4.47 on Friday, marking its lowest point since last September, after closing at HK$4.86 the previous day. The mainland-listed shares also saw a decline of more than 4%, opening at 6.6 yuan, following reports of CEO Zhu Jiusheng's police involvement.

As the largest property developer by revenue in China, Vanke faces a looming challenge with US$4.9 billion in bonds maturing this year. The recent share price drop coincided with a report from the Economic Observer that raised concerns about Zhu's detention. However, local media indicated he was actively promoting the company on social media shortly after the news broke. Analysts suggest that Vanke's substantial debts and declining bond prices contribute to a negative market sentiment, potentially impacting the broader real estate sector. Nonetheless, some believe that government intervention could stabilize the situation if Vanke is taken over to prevent further collapse.
