TSMC’s US plant unlikely to get latest chip technology ahead of Taiwan, CEO says

TSMC's new factory in Arizona will not have access to the most advanced chip technology before its facilities in Taiwan due to complex compliance and permitting issues. The company's chief executive, C C Wei, highlighted that the construction process in the U.S. is taking significantly longer than in Taiwan, complicating efforts to enhance domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

Wei explained that every construction step in Arizona requires a permit, and the time taken to receive approvals is at least double that in Taiwan. Consequently, TSMC anticipates that the latest chip technology will be utilized in Taiwan before it becomes available in the U.S. Despite these challenges, TSMC is investing $65 billion in three large factories in Arizona, ensuring that the quality of chips produced will match those made in Taiwan. Nonetheless, the majority of TSMC's advanced chip manufacturing will continue to occur in Taiwan.
