ByteDance launches AI code editor based on Microsoft software as TikTok ban is delayed

ByteDance recently launched an AI-powered code editor named Trae, aiming to compete with established products like Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code and Cursor. This move comes shortly after the U.S. government delayed a law that could have forced ByteDance to divest TikTok, allowing the company to expand its software offerings without immediate regulatory pressures.

Trae is designed for international markets and includes features that enable programmers to interact with an AI assistant while coding, generating code snippets or entire projects from natural language inputs. The tool utilizes advanced AI technologies, specifically OpenAI’s GPT-4o or Anthropic’s Claude-3.5-Sonnet, and currently offers its AI capabilities for free. The interface supports both English and Chinese, catering to a significant number of overseas programmers from China.

Available initially on macOS, with a Windows version in development, Trae is distributed by ByteDance's Singapore-based subsidiary, Spring Pte. As a fork of Microsoft’s open-source Visual Studio Code, Trae is built on Electron, a framework utilizing web standards from Google’s Chromium, further enhancing its compatibility and performance in the development environment.
