Phishing alert as Hong Kong workers warned to be wary of fake company emails
Hongkongers are being urged to remain vigilant against phishing scams, particularly those disguised as internal company communications. This warning follows a recent drill revealing the susceptibility of employees to such scams, with a significant number clicking on fake emails. The exercise, conducted by the Hong Kong police alongside the Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation, involved 216 companies and tested over 37,000 employees using four common phishing email templates.
The drill highlighted that employees often let their guard down when receiving emails that appear to be from within their own company. A fake survey purportedly from the human resources department proved to be the most convincing, with 9.5 percent of participants clicking on it. Other types included fake bank alerts and IT system requests, which also saw notable engagement. This pattern underscores the need for increased awareness and training to combat such cybersecurity threats, as these scams exploit the trust placed in internal communications and can lead to severe security breaches if not addressed effectively.
