Rescued Ukraine artworks on display in German exhibition free for Ukrainian refugees

In a significant cultural preservation effort, a Berlin gallery has unveiled an exhibition of artworks from Ukraine's Odesa Museum, evacuated to Germany in 2023 to protect them from Russian attacks. Approximately 60 pieces from the museum are now on display at the Gemäldegalerie, highlighting international cooperation in safeguarding cultural heritage during times of conflict. Germany's President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, emphasized the country's commitment to supporting Ukraine's freedom and cultural preservation at the exhibition's opening.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Odesa museum's director took swift action to protect the collection by relocating the artworks. Initially hidden in western Ukraine, they were later moved to Berlin for restoration. This exhibition is unusual, as the works are displayed in simple wooden frames, reflecting their extraordinary journey. Steinmeier noted that these are not typical art loans, underscoring the unique circumstances that brought them to Berlin. This initiative not only preserves invaluable art but also symbolizes solidarity amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
