Hong Kong’s homeless flock to shelters, but some left shivering on streets

As temperatures plummeted in Hong Kong, many homeless individuals sought refuge in temporary shelters, though some remained exposed to the cold outdoors. The Observatory issued a cold weather warning, prompting the Home Affairs Department to open 18 shelters across various districts to provide essential relief. These shelters offer basic amenities like mattresses, blankets, quilts, hot meals, and water, staying operational as long as the warning persists.

The efforts to aid those without homes were evident at the Causeway Bay Community Centre, where nine individuals, including Ambrose, a 60-year-old man affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, gathered for warmth and sustenance. Ambrose, who lost his job and home, shared how he frequently turns to such shelters during extreme weather conditions to avoid sleeping outdoors. This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the homeless population in Hong Kong, exacerbated by economic and health crises, emphasizing the critical role of community support in times of need.
