US should not cross ‘red lines’, Taiwan No 1 risk to stable ties: top Beijing envoy

Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng has warned the United States to refrain from crossing Beijing's "red lines" to ensure stable relations, highlighting the Taiwan issue as the most significant potential threat to US-China ties. During a Lunar New Year reception in Washington, Xie emphasized the importance of respecting China's core interests and adhering to fundamental principles to maintain a stable and sustainable relationship between the two nations.

Xie underscored the critical nature of the Taiwan question, warning that it could disrupt bilateral relations if not managed carefully. He reiterated the necessity of abiding by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, which affirm the US recognition of Beijing's stance that Taiwan is part of China. This approach, according to Xie, is essential for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and nurturing a cooperative US-China relationship, which is more significant than ever in today's global context.
