Ukraine war: Zelensky replaces troop commander after Russia captures another town
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has replaced the commander of the eastern front following a strategic setback in the ongoing conflict with Russia. Brigadier-General Andriy Hnatov has been succeeded by Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, who will retain his previous responsibilities as the overall commander of ground forces. This command change comes after Russian forces captured the strategic town of Velyka Novosilka in the Donetsk region, signifying a critical shift in the battlefield dynamics.
Donetsk has been a central focus of the conflict since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, and strengthening command in this region is crucial for Ukraine. The region has been a hotbed of intense fighting since 2014, with both sides incurring significant military losses. The Ukrainian military's withdrawal from Velyka Novosilka highlights the challenges faced by Kyiv, even as it manages to hold territories elsewhere. The newly appointed commander, Drapatyi, is known for his effective defense against Russian advances in the Kharkiv region, and his leadership is seen as pivotal in bolstering Ukraine's position on the eastern front.
