Bali bomber’s pardon plea: after Bali Nine releases, will Prabowo follow suit?

Ali Imron, the convicted Bali bomber, is seeking a pardon from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, citing his cooperation with counterterrorism and the release of Australian drug offenders as justification. Despite his plea, analysts believe his chances are low due to potential backlash from Australia and concerns within the Indonesian government about freeing a convicted terrorist.

Imron has been incarcerated for 22 years after being sentenced to life for his involvement in the 2002 bombings that claimed 202 lives, including 88 Australians, and left many others injured. He played a crucial role in the attack by assembling and transporting explosives, but avoided the death penalty by expressing remorse and assisting authorities with detailed information about the operation. Two years ago, he filed for a presidential pardon, marking his only remaining legal option for a possible release.
