8 years after Irish tourist’s rape-murder, Indian man gets life in prison

Vikat Bhagat, 31, has been sentenced to life in prison by a court in Goa, India, for the 2017 rape and murder of Danielle McLaughlin, a 28-year-old Irish woman. McLaughlin's body was discovered on a popular tourist beach in Goa, and the autopsy revealed that her death was caused by cerebral damage and constriction of the neck.

Bhagat was convicted of the crime on Friday, and McLaughlin's family expressed their gratitude to the public prosecutor and investigating officer for their work in achieving justice. The case brought attention to the ongoing issue of violence against women in India, despite stricter laws implemented following a 2012 gang rape case in New Delhi. Goa is a well-known tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors to its beaches annually.
