Geophysicist Niu Fenglin, after two decades in the US, has returned to China to join the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) as a distinguished chair professor. Niu, known for his research on the Earth's deep structures and seismic diversity, left his full professorship at Rice University in Houston, Texas, in November to take up the position at USTC, a top university in Anhui province.
Niu's research focuses on developing imaging techniques to map the Earth's interior and understand its chemical and physical processes. Notably, his 2008 research published in Nature analyzed data from the San Andreas Fault, demonstrating that subtle seismic changes preceding earthquakes could be measured, marking "a new step forward in earthquake prediction." Niu graduated from USTC in 1988 and earned a PhD from the University of Tokyo before joining Rice University in 2002.
