Like Harbin, Hong Kong should focus on what makes it unique

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee's recent visit to Harbin highlighted the city's success in integrating sports and cultural tourism, particularly its renowned ice and snow activities. Lee lauded Harbin's approach as an inspiration for Hong Kong, which is seeking to boost its own tourism through mega-events.

However, Harbin's appeal extends beyond hosting events like the Asian Winter Games. Its "Ice City" reputation is deeply rooted in its local culture and history, exemplified by the annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, which dates back to the 1960s. This suggests that Hong Kong should focus on cultivating its own unique qualities and attractions, rather than solely relying on mega-events to draw tourists. Many Chinese cities, including Harbin with its Russian architectural legacy, have successfully built strong local identities to attract visitors.
