Tech war: ex-Apple engineer returns to China to teach about semiconductors at alma mater
Wang Huanyu, a former Apple semiconductor engineer, has returned to China to teach at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) as a professor in the School of Integrated Circuits (ICs). This move is part of a growing trend of Chinese tech talent leaving the United States to contribute to China's domestic semiconductor industry.
Wang's return is expected to strengthen the academic capabilities of Chinese universities, particularly in IC-focused curricula, as China aims for self-sufficiency in semiconductor technology amid US sanctions restricting access to advanced chips and manufacturing equipment. After graduating from HUST in 2014, Wang spent a decade in the US studying and working on semiconductors, including his role as an implementation engineer for central processing units at Apple's US headquarters from 2021 to 2024. Now he joins more than 10 Chinese universities that have established IC schools to cultivate the next generation of tech talent, including prestigious institutions like Tsinghua University and Peking University.
