‘Beyond maliciousness’: Japanese man who raped 10 girls given life sentence

Tomoya Yanagimoto, a 28-year-old former hospital worker, has been sentenced to life in prison by the Osaka District Court for sexually assaulting 10 elementary schoolgirls. The sentence, delivered on Tuesday, follows Yanagimoto's guilty plea to multiple counts of rape resulting in injury, committed between March 2016 and May 2022.

Judge Hiroki Ito condemned Yanagimoto's actions as "despicable and beyond the realms of maliciousness." The court determined that Yanagimoto was mentally competent to stand trial despite his claims of a mental disorder, citing his ability to work and function in society. Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Yanagimoto meticulously planned his crimes, tracking the girls' family schedules to break into their homes when they were alone, and that he recorded the assaults on his smartphone.
