China approves RedNote’s AI translation along with 5 other models
Shanghai's internet regulator has approved six new generative AI services for public use, including a translation tool from the popular Chinese social platform RedNote. This approval comes as RedNote experienced a surge in overseas users amidst uncertainty surrounding TikTok's future in the United States. The newly approved services also include an AI assistant for the upcoming Global Developer Conference in Shanghai.
The RedNote translator, officially named Xiaohongshu Fanyi, is owned by Xingyin Information Technology (Shanghai). This approval is part of a larger trend, with the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) having approved 74 large language models (LLMs) in Shanghai and over 300 nationwide since implementing GenAI regulations in August 2023. RedNote launched its in-app translation feature in late January in response to an influx of users seeking alternatives to TikTok due to potential bans in the US.
