Spain’s Rubiales guilty of sexual assault, fined for World Cup kiss
Former Spanish football boss Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexually assaulting player Jenni Hermoso and fined over €10,000 for kissing her without consent after the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. In addition to the fine, the court ordered Rubiales to stay at least 200 meters away from Hermoso and prohibited him from contacting her for a year.
While Rubiales was cleared of coercion, the incident, where he kissed Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony in Sydney, sparked widespread outrage and overshadowed Spain's World Cup victory. Rubiales claimed the kiss was consensual, a statement Hermoso vehemently denied. Three other Spanish federation members who were accused of pressuring Hermoso to downplay the incident were also acquitted of coercion charges.
