Most Singaporeans say budget sweeteners inadequate to cushion rising living costs: survey

A recent poll indicates that a majority (55%) of Singapore residents feel the government's latest budget measures, totaling nearly S$124 billion, are insufficient to address the rising cost of living. The survey, conducted by Milieu Insight, highlights concerns that shopping vouchers and subsidies for aged care aren't enough to offset increased prices for essential goods and services like food and housing.

This sentiment poses a challenge for the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) as they prepare for a general election later this year. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who delivered the budget and became premier in May 2024, acknowledged the public's struggle to adjust to "new price realities" and promised continued support. The budget includes S$800 in vouchers for households, tax rebates, and aid for families, low-income individuals, and the elderly, alongside infrastructure spending, but the survey suggests these measures may not be perceived as adequate amid slower economic growth and potential tariff wars.
