The Chinese-origin scientists who helped to hone America’s leading edge in defence

The number of Chinese-origin scientists and engineers recognized for their work in the US defense industry has significantly declined in recent years. This trend is evident in the Asian-American Engineer of the Year (AAEOY) awards, where winners from defense-related institutions like Los Alamos National Laboratory and Lockheed Martin have become scarce, replaced by those in commercial sectors.

This shift coincides with growing US-China competition and increased anti-China sentiment in research, potentially stemming from the "China Initiative" that targeted scientists with suspected ties to Beijing. As China's military capabilities rapidly advance, closing the gap with the US, the defense industry appears to be narrowing opportunities for Chinese-origin experts, despite their historical contributions.
