How Hong Kong can seize opportunities along Silk Road Economic Belt
Hong Kong aims to solidify its role as a key platform for the Belt and Road Initiative, enhancing connectivity with both mainland China and the rest of the world. The city plans to expand international connections and strengthen economic cooperation, particularly with markets along the Silk Road Economic Belt, to unlock new avenues for economic growth.
Historically, regions like Central Asia were geographically distant, limiting trade. However, in 2023, nine of Hong Kong's top 50 export markets were along the Silk Road Economic Belt. From 2013 to 2023, exports to these nine markets surged by 52 per cent, reaching HK$86.7 billion. Hong Kong can leverage its position as a culinary capital and wine trading hub to promote products like wine and jewellery from these regions internationally, capitalizing on untapped business opportunities, especially after the recent reduction in liquor duty.
