Thailand’s tourism goal in doubt as Chinese travellers opt for Japan

Thailand's goal of attracting 9 million Chinese tourists this year is in jeopardy due to safety concerns. The kidnapping of a Chinese actor and subsequent reports of scams and criminal activity have led to a significant drop in flight bookings and a surge in cancellations, particularly during the Lunar New Year period.

Chinese tourists are increasingly opting for destinations like Japan and Singapore, perceived as safer alternatives. Flight bookings from China to Japan have more than doubled, driven by factors like the weaker yen and affordable airfares. Thailand's efforts to crack down on criminal rings have so far failed to alleviate travelers' fears, making it an uphill battle to restore its reputation as a safe tourist destination.
