More Pogo raids stoke fears about a ‘cottage industry’ of scam activities

Analysts warn that scam hubs linked to banned offshore gaming operators could become a permanent fixture in the Philippines if law enforcement fails to completely dismantle the networks that fuel their illicit activities. This warning comes after the recent arrest of 450 people, including Chinese nationals believed to be the bosses, at a suspected scam hub in Manila on February 20.

Investigations by the Philippine Anti-Organised Crime Commission (PAOCC) revealed that the hub may have been operating as a scam center targeting victims in China and India with sports betting and investment schemes. Chester Cabalza, president of a Manila-based think tank, cautioned that these small-scale scam houses could become a widespread problem in Metro Manila if not eradicated.
