Trump science policy nominee calls China most formidable technology, science competitor

Michael Kratsios, nominated to head the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, has identified China as the United States' primary competitor in science and technology. He emphasized the critical importance of leading in areas like AI, quantum computing, and nuclear technology, asserting that global leadership in these fields will define the future global order.

Kratsios highlighted China's advancements in nuclear fusion, quantum technologies, and autonomous systems as evidence of the urgent need for the US to prioritize these areas. This assessment comes as the Trump administration has already taken steps to bolster US AI capabilities, including an executive order mandating an Artificial Intelligence Action Plan aimed at maintaining American dominance in AI for economic and national security purposes. Kratsios previously served as the US chief technology officer in the Trump administration.
