China arms combat robots with controversial thermobaric weapon in urban warfare drill

Chinese military scientists are proposing equipping ground robots with thermobaric warheads for urban warfare, marking the first official disclosure of plans to deploy these controversial munitions on unmanned systems. This move aims to achieve "comprehensive annihilation" in complex urban environments where traditional weapons may be less effective due to GPS jamming, electromagnetic interference, and dense structures.

Recent People’s Liberation Army (PLA) urban warfare drills have highlighted the limitations of unmanned platforms armed solely with light weapons in rooting out enemies shielded in buildings or underground bunkers. Dang Chenguang, lead author of a study in the Journal of Ordnance Equipment Engineering, emphasized that modern cities have become "vortexes of warfare," necessitating more destructive solutions.
