China could lose 35% of its cropland by 2100, scientists warn

A new study projects that China could lose 35% of its cropland by 2100, even if global warming is limited as per the Paris Agreement. This potential loss raises significant concerns about future food security in China and highlights the urgent need for updated and more robust cropland protection policies.

The study, published in Science China Earth Sciences, indicates that agricultural land is likely to be converted into wetlands and forests, particularly in key grain-producing regions like the Sichuan Basin and the plains of north and northeast China. Researchers from Beijing Normal University used the CLUMondo data set to map land types and project these shifts, also noting significant changes in cropland and grassland areas in China's southern and coastal regions, as well as wetland changes along the eastern coastline.
