Cuts will help to counter China ‘threat’, US deputy defence pick tells Senate

Donald Trump's nominee for Deputy Defense Secretary, Stephen Feinberg, has pledged to enhance the US military's technological edge against China by increasing private sector involvement in defense technology development. Feinberg, a billionaire investor, believes closer collaboration with the private sector will boost efficiency and financial accountability within the Pentagon, ultimately strengthening America's defense capabilities.

During his confirmation hearing, Feinberg emphasized the need to address "shortages" in critical technologies required to "beat China," identifying it as the foremost threat to the US. Key areas of focus include shipbuilding, aircraft development, nuclear modernization, cyber defense, hypersonics, counterspace capabilities, and counter-drone platforms. Feinberg aims to leverage his private equity experience to streamline the defense acquisition process, fostering competition and ensuring access to cutting-edge technology.
