Huawei, Vivo, Xiaomi lead China’s smartphone sales surge fuelled by government subsidies
Huawei topped China's smartphone market in January, driven by a government subsidy program for electronics. According to Counterpoint Research, the subsidy, which provides a 15% discount (up to 500 yuan) on devices under 6,000 yuan, significantly boosted sales. This allowed Huawei to surpass Vivo and Xiaomi, which took second and third place respectively.
The overall Chinese smartphone market saw a 17% increase in sales compared to the previous year, with the fastest growth in the 2,000-5,000 yuan price range. Counterpoint Research noted that the subsidy scheme "ignited the vitality" of the market and anticipates it will contribute an additional 2-3% growth in first-quarter sales. Sales during the first week of the program jumped 65% year-on-year, reaching over 9.5 million units.
