Alibaba’s research arm launches new RISC-V processor for high-performance computing

Alibaba's Damo Academy has launched its first server-grade CPU, the C930, based on the RISC-V architecture, to enhance its AI capabilities and circumvent US chip restrictions. The C930, the latest in the XuanTie RISC-V processor series, is designed for high-performance computing and will be available to clients starting in March. This move underscores Alibaba's commitment to supporting China's chip self-sufficiency efforts amidst increasing US export controls on advanced semiconductors.

The C930 is part of Alibaba's broader strategy to build an ecosystem around the open-source RISC-V architecture, which allows for free use and modification, unlike proprietary standards like Intel's x86 and Arm's architecture. Damo Academy also unveiled plans for new XuanTie series chips, including the C908X, R908A, and XL200, targeting AI acceleration, automotive applications, and high-speed interconnection, respectively. This launch follows Alibaba's recent announcement of a significant investment in AI and cloud infrastructure, aimed at meeting the growing demand for AI models.
