In ‘fixing’ a trumped-up crisis, Trump may end up creating one

Donald Trump's claim that the US economy is in crisis is not supported by current economic indicators. Despite his campaign rhetoric promising to fix a perceived economic disaster and usher in a "golden age," the reality is that key metrics like the "misery index" (the sum of unemployment and inflation rates) are significantly better than historical averages and comparable to his first term, which he often lauded as the "greatest economy in the history of the world."

The danger lies in Trump acting on this false premise, potentially triggering the very crisis he envisions through aggressive policies. Specifically, his proposed "reciprocal tariff plan," intended to force other nations to conform to the American economic model, could spark inflation and disrupt global trade. This approach extends beyond trade to encompass industrial policies, taxes, currency manipulation, and other perceived barriers to foreign market access, raising concerns about potential economic instability.
