Australian navy rescues cross-Pacific rower from cyclone-tossed seas
An Australian warship rescued Lithuanian solo rower Aurimas Mockus after he encountered Tropical Cyclone Alfred while attempting to row across the Pacific Ocean from California to Brisbane. Mockus had been adrift for three days in the Coral Sea, about 740km east of Mackay, Queensland, after activating an emergency beacon due to stormy seas and high winds.
Mockus, 44, began his 12,000km journey in October from San Diego and was nearing Brisbane when he encountered the storm. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority coordinated the rescue, with the Royal Australian Navy landing ship HMAS Choules taking Mockus aboard for a medical assessment. His boat could not be recovered due to the severe weather conditions.
