A traffic-free Oxford Street? London Mayor Sadiq Khan wants to unlock its ‘true potential’

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has launched a consultation on a plan to pedestrianise Oxford Street, aiming to revitalise the iconic shopping destination. The proposal involves creating a new Mayoral Development Corporation with the authority to remove traffic from the street, despite previous failed attempts and anticipated local opposition.

Khan argues that Oxford Street has suffered in recent years, with the Covid-19 pandemic accelerating a decline in footfall. He believes the pedestrianisation plan will unlock the street's potential, support businesses, create jobs, and boost economic growth. A similar proposal was withdrawn in 2018 due to a lack of public support after Khan initially proposed it in his 2016 mayoral election manifesto.
