Women hold 1 in 5 board seats in Hong Kong firms for first time, report says
Women's representation on Hong Kong company boards has reached a new high, exceeding 20% for the first time. According to a recent MSCI report, 20.8% of board seats in Hong Kong-listed companies were held by women as of October, marking an increase from 19% the previous year and 16% in 2022. The number of companies with a female CEO also saw a rise, reaching 5.6% compared to 4.4% a year prior.
This progress follows a 2021 rule change by the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX), mandating that all listed companies have at least one female board member by the end of 2024. While most companies have complied, a small percentage had not met the requirement as of January. The MSCI report also highlighted that companies with at least 30% female board representation achieved significantly higher cumulative returns. However, the percentage of companies with a female CFO has decreased, indicating that disparities remain in senior management roles.
