What you need to know about Hong Kong’s new premium taxi fleet

Hong Kong is set to launch 3,500 premium taxis from five new fleets later this month, aiming to revamp the city's taxi industry. These fleets, including Joie, SynCab, Amigo, Big Boss, and Big Bee, represent nearly 20% of Hong Kong's total taxi count and are expected to offer enhanced services, though some fares may exceed those of existing taxis and ride-hailing services.

The government hopes these premium fleets will address long-standing complaints about poor service and resistance to non-cash payments within the taxi industry. SynCab, which began trials in January, offers a glimpse into the potential pricing, with a ride from Kwun Tong to West Kowloon station costing HK$163, significantly more than a regular taxi but comparable to Uber's premium options. The introduction of these fleets is a significant step towards modernizing Hong Kong's transportation landscape.
