Tech war: China leads US in quantity, quality of semiconductor research, report finds

China is now producing twice as many research papers on chip design and fabrication as the United States, potentially paving the way for leadership in next-generation semiconductor technology. From 2018 to 2023, Chinese scholars published 160,852 chip-related papers, exceeding the combined output of the next three leading countries. This surge in research underscores China's growing focus on semiconductor advancement, despite current limitations in advanced chip manufacturing capabilities.

The US ranked second with 71,688 articles, followed by India and Japan, according to the Emerging Technology Observatory (ETO) at Georgetown University. The ETO report also highlighted that Chinese institutions dominated the top rankings for both the number of chip articles produced and the frequency of citations. This research boom is occurring against the backdrop of China's intensified efforts to achieve self-reliance in the semiconductor industry, driven by national security concerns and US sanctions.
