China facing growing campaign to make it compulsory to label AI-generated content

China is increasingly supporting mandatory labeling of AI-generated content to curb its misuse. A proposal by National People's Congress member Li Dongsheng to label AI-generated content is gaining traction, with backing from a People's Daily commentary, highlighting the need to mitigate the technology's potential for malicious use.

The commentary, authored by Liu Xingliang from the Data Centre of China Internet (DCCI), emphasizes that labeling aligns with social governance needs and promotes the healthy growth of the AI industry. With AI models like DeepSeek becoming more prevalent, concerns are rising about issues like academic fraud and deepfake scams, which could spread misinformation and threaten social stability, thus necessitating regulation to guide the technology's development.
