As stablecoins grow, Hong Kong’s US dollar peg seen as advantage despite Web3 challenges

Hong Kong's currency peg to the US dollar could give it an advantage in the growing stablecoin market, acting as a bridge between Web3 and traditional finance. The majority of stablecoin trading activity involves cryptocurrencies backed by the US dollar, making Hong Kong's USD peg attractive for companies dealing with USD-pegged assets like Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC).

Hong Kong's established position as a global financial hub, coupled with its deep foreign exchange market and regulatory environment that facilitates currency conversion, further strengthens its appeal for USD conversions. The preference for USD-backed stablecoins reinforces the dollar's dominance in global finance, as maintaining a one-to-one peg necessitates substantial USD reserves, a requirement increasingly enforced by regulations, including Hong Kong's pending stablecoin legislation.
