China says rising military budget ‘reasonable’ in face of ‘complex security environment’
China has announced it will "vigorously" develop new combat capabilities, citing a complex security environment and deepening rivalry with the United States. This announcement was made alongside the unveiling of a 7.2% increase in military spending, which defense ministry spokesman Wu Qian defended as "reasonable and steady" and aligned with economic growth.
Despite the increased budget, Wu Qian acknowledged the challenges in transforming the People’s Liberation Army into a "world-class" military by 2027. The military budget will rise to 1.81 trillion yuan (US$250 billion) this year. This increase comes amid rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, as well as ongoing efforts to combat military corruption.
