France and Hong Kong can tap AI possibilities together, top diplomat says

France's top diplomat to Hong Kong, Christile Drulhe, believes that artificial intelligence (AI) presents new opportunities for business and academic collaboration between France and Hong Kong. This comes as Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po has made AI a focal point of the city's economic strategy, including a HK$1 billion investment to establish the Hong Kong AI Research and Development Institute.

Drulhe's optimism stems from French President Emmanuel Macron's recent announcement of €109 billion in AI-related investments. She anticipates that the recent summit in Paris, focused on AI governance, will foster investment opportunities and exchanges between Hong Kong and France. While acknowledging a decrease in the French community in Hong Kong since the pandemic, Drulhe remains confident in the city's potential as a major financial hub, particularly as it refocuses on economic development after prioritizing national security in recent years.
