Australia’s antisemitic crime wave may have been a hoax

Australian police have revealed that an explosives-filled caravan, initially described as an antisemitic terrorism plot, was actually a hoax staged by criminals seeking personal gain. The caravan, discovered on the outskirts of Sydney in January, was never intended to be detonated. This revelation follows a months-long increase in antisemitic incidents in Australia.

The cluster of attacks, including a firebombing of a synagogue and instances of antisemitic vandalism, were allegedly committed by a small group or even a single individual, motivated by financial gain rather than antisemitic ideology. While authorities have arrested multiple individuals in connection with these crimes, they maintain that the perpetrators were criminals for hire. Despite this, police acknowledge a significant escalation in antisemitism in Australia since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel, which triggered the war in Gaza.
